There’s something magical about taking a road trip to your favorite West Virginia state park. Car packed up, family along for the ride, driving down winding country roads with your windows rolled down and music playing as the sun sets in the rearview mirror. With Labor Day right around the corner, we can’t think of a better way to end the summer season.

Here are five West Virginia state parks that are perfect for a long Labor Day weekend road trip.

In the heart of Southern West Virginia and in close proximity to several trailheads of the Hatfield McCoy Trails system, Chief Logan State Park is a favorite among off-road riders near and far. The park’s lodge features a full-service restaurant, indoor swimming pool, spa tub and fitness center. You can also drive from the park to Cabwaylingo State Forest, which features nearly 100 miles of trails for ATV, UTV, 4×4 and dirt bike riders. You’ll also find parking for trucks and trailers as well as a trailhead facility with trail permits for sale.

Planning a long weekend? Book your lodging in advance and check out our suggested itinerary below.

Day 1 Load up the ATVs and head over to Cabwaylingo State Forest and spend the day riding the Cabwaylingo Trail. Finish your day with a hot meal and a relaxing soak in the spa tub at Chief Logan Lodge.

Day 2 Fish in the morning. Plan a picnic lunch. Pay a visit to the Museum in the Park, which features artwork and historical items from the collection of the West Virginia State Museum. Day 3 Hike in the morning Take in some afternoon sun and enjoy the last outdoor swim of the season at Chief Logan’s outdoor pool.

Get away from it all and enjoy a relaxing getaway at Twin Falls Resort State Park. At Twin Falls, enjoy more than 25 miles of hiking and biking trails, an 18-hole golf course, indoor swimming pool and cozy accommodations. The park features a fully-functional Pioneer Farm, which offers park visitors a glimpse of what life was like on the frontier.
