Instead of honking cars, you wanna hear the sound of cascading waterfalls or the rustling leaves in the breezy winds, don’t you?

Well, we’ve got just the staycation place for you!

There’s a new homestay in Serendah and it’s made from bamboo and bertam leaves!

Umah Temuan is an initiative made by an NGO called Epic, a social enterprise named Native Discovery, together with a global science company called 3M.

With a soothing river backdrop and lush in Hulu Selangor, the initiative aims to help the Temuan Orang Asli tribe gain income through community-based tourism. Besides boosting the local economy, the initiative also intends to drive awareness of the beautiful culture and tradition of the Temuan tribe.

The Temuan village in Kampung Serendah has a lot to offer in terms of culture and experiences. To spotlight their colourful heritage and way of living, we devised a community-based homestay initiative that will boost the local economy whilst promoting the local culture, that will ultimately become a self-sustaining ecosystem.”

The homestay is like an open-air cabin with bamboo and bertam leaves being most of the materials used, which are influenced by the Temuan tribe’s tradition. They’re actually built by volunteers and a group of talented Orang Asli Temuan community members who have been mastering the indigenous build for years.

High pitched roofs, locally sourced atap bertam and bamboo wall panel weaving were used to cultivate understanding and appreciation for the Orang Asli’s culture and heritage.

Here in Umah Temuan, apart from sleeping in the breezy and calming forest, you can do activities like jungle trekking, playing with the waterfalls, learning how to cook indigenous recipes or even try weaving bertam leaves for roof thatches.

You can book a private guided hike through the rich greenery of Kampung Serendah forest, that will be led by Roslan – better known as Ayah Indah in the community – and his team of experienced native guides.

They have a popular waterfall there called the Serendah Waterfalls, that’s accessible via the village. You will have private access to the riverbed of Sungai Sendat, where you are free to enjoy the peace and serenity of nature there.

Furthermore, you can feast on the best Temuan cuisine there, made by their native cooks using traditional cooking techniques and natural ingredients sourced from the Kebuns themselves. They can also show you some of their artistic weaving skills, so you can have a memorable and fun time learning their traditional arts.

The Hulu Selangor district village is 45-minutes (around 40 km) from the city center of Kuala Lumpur and is home to around 600 Temuan Orang Asli, the largest Orang Asli ethnicity in the Selangor state.
